By the mid-19th century, Santana was the first rural village of Madeira to have hotels. These were sought by travellers who explored this remote part of the island by walking, riding on a horseback or by travelling in the disappeared oxen wagons. They stayed for a few days, enjoying the beautiful sightseeings, the unsual subtropical vegetation and a pleasant weather, before they climb onto the nearby mountain peaks.

They were almost holidays inside holidays: the highest point of a long staying on the island. Those were different days though – tourists by that time belonged to a wealthy or crowned European elite; they would not visit Madeira for a period not inferior to two months, saving the best part to the visiting of the north coast of the island.Little has changed in this small town of the north and, maybe because of that, Santana still remains to be sought by many visitors.

Quinta do Furão binds in a harmonious way comfort and good taste of a modern hotel surrounded by relaxing landscape where nature is still displayed in its purest way with untouched gardens and there is also a 5 ha field of the most known Madeira grapevines – such as Sercial, Verdelho and Malvasia - grown strictly with biological methods.
